Endoscopy at NVHC
Endoscopy is a medical procedure that uses a tube-like instrument called an endoscope. The endoscope is put into the body to look inside, and perform certain surgical procedures. Endoscopy is typically done to screen for cancers. Cancer of the colon or rectum (colorectal cancer) usually develops slowly, over several years. Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.

Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. From 2008 to 2012, 257 cases of colon cancer were diagnosed at Altru Health System, affecting both females (52 percent) and males (48 percent). Half of those diagnosed have stage III or IV colon cancer. Due to advancements in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer death rate has been dropping for more than 20 years. When detected early, it’s treatable. Endoscopy is the best line of defense in reducing risk.If individuals have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, regular screenings should happen earlier than age 50. For those with no family history, endoscopy is recommended once a decade after age 50. They are covered by most insurance policies.
North Valley Health Center will offer endoscopy services once per month depending on area need.
